Tryin to install a DVD R/RW

I bought a dvd r/rw from a buddie of mine for a steal. I know that it works because I burnt a dvd on it before I bought it. I took my old cd rom out and replaced it and hooked all the wires that was in the old one back into it. My computer doesnt even recongize it. So I went to a support site and got detailed instruction on how to install it. Heres the catch, I dont know what most of the things were that they refered to. My Os is windows XP, and the dvd is a NEC model # nd-1100a. It came out of a dell dimension 8250 (if that helps). My pc is not a dell. Here is pretty much in the installation that I get lost. If you are replacing an existing drive, determine whether your old drive has an IDE interface, then disconnect and remove the old drive from the system. (I have no idea what a IDE interface is). Verify that the jumper is set to CSEL (Cable Select) The jumper is located at the Jumper Connector. (agin I have not idea what the CSEL is).Locate the secondary IDE connector on the system motherboard.Using the IDE cable provided with the system, connect the drive’s IDE Interface Connector to the existing secondary IDE connector.
Connect the audio cable between the DVD+R/RW drive’s Analog Audio Connector and the sound card or the system motherboard if necessary. Any help would be greatly appericated. I'm on yahoo messenger under import_rev. If someone could help please let me know something. Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

Well, I got bad news for ya. The software wont work except on a dell. Cuz I got 2 of those same drives, lol. I cant remember which software specifically but I think its the power dvd that wont work.

Anyway....

The drive should work fine, u just have to get some different dvd software.

IDE interface is just referring to the IDe cable..the wide flat cable that was hooked to the cd drive.

The jumper is this little thing on the back of the dvd drive. It is just a little plastic thing like the black one here http://www.techimo.com/forum/attachm...?postid=887907

they just connect two pins together...youll see it when u look at the back of the dvd..here is a generic description with some diagrams http://www.lgeservice.com/jump.html

There should be some writing on the bottom of the dvd near the back or on the back itself..little letters...like "csel" and "master" etc..telling what jumper position does what.

If you have the dvdrom on the cable by itself you can probably have it set as master or as "csel".

Then you might have to go into the bios and set the secondary master to "auto"
