Graphics Card Upgrade = unstable FS2004

I just upgraded my vid card from a GF3 to a 9600Pro. Now my FS2004 isn't working properly, it will crash every time I exit the game, and sometimes will randomly crash while I'm in the game. The only thing I have changed really is the video card and the drivers.

One funny thing- when I installed the Catalyst 3.9 drivers- I tried to start up FS2004 and it would load the spash screen but never load the program completely. Eventually I determined that directX was not behaving- so I went to run DXDiag and it repoted me as having DX8.1 installed! This made no sense to me as I KNOW I installed DX9 just a week prior when FS2004 forced me to do it. So after (re)installing DX9, the game loaded up fine but now I'm getting those errors. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the game as well.

Does anyone have any ideas? This one really puzzles me.

first unistall your video drivers, then install the generic windows default driver, reboot and then run detonator-destroyer. Reboot again then reinstall DX9, reboot and try installing your new video drivers again.

Some times you really have to format and intall from scratch to fix old driver issues.

Thanks adkt7 you got me on the right track.

Looks like I fixed it now- When my computer reverted back to DX8.1 something went screwy with some DirectPlay8 registry entries. Reinstalling DX9 did not write them back in, nor does it remove them (I guess there are DX8 components in DX9 still). What I ended up having to do then was to uninstall DX9 and grab the DX8.1 files off my XP cd- then reinstall 9 over it again. That seemed to do the trick.

I kept getting multiplayer.dll errors when I quit FS that is what tipped me off to the problem. Dxdiag showed me that I was missing registry entries.
