cdrom Event ID 7, device has a bad block
I suddenly can't read about 8 of my CD's that I could access before...I have valuable files stored on these CD's. Yikes!
Here's what I get:
source Cdrom
Event ID 7
The device,\Device\Cdrom1, has a bad block.
When I try to access the drive E
(Philips CDRW 800),
I get this:
unexpected error code. Attempting to change to directory E:\gave unexpected error.
I'm running Windows 2000 Pro
with service Pack 4
with 515,536 KB RAM. Dial-up.
I tried cleaning the drive / didn't help
I tried using the other Drive D ATAPI CDR / nope
These CD's worked before.
I'm thinking it may be a buffer problem...if that's possible on the "reading" function of a CD rom because I set the copy speed down to it's lowest # (1X) to record onto CD's using the Philips CDRW 800..and that has allowed me to FINALLY be able to record...but still I throw away 3 out of 4 of those MEMOREX cheapo CD's due to errors caused by an "under buffer"...whatever that means. Do you think if I set the "read" speed lower, that might help & if so, how do I do that to at least try it.
Or do I need another CDROM?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions...hope I gave enough info. I'm new at this.....

If it's only some burned disks, it happens on all CD drives, and you have been having issues with bad burns, then I'd say that the there is something wrong with the disks -- quite possibly that they weren't burned correctly in the first play.
Have you ever been able to read these particular disks? Have you tried them in a different computer?

probably the disks are the problem?
Well....that makes sense, of course. I haven't had the opportunity to try and retrieve the stored files from the CD's on another computer. But I will do that.
When I first burned them, I always check to make sure they "took". They were fine when I tested them then. Is there any program or anything whatsoever that can get those files back...just in case they can't be read on another computer?
Kinda makes CD's a bit risky to use for valuable file storage. I even did 2 back ups and BOTH CD's are not reading.
Thanx sechs

If you can't get any computer to read them, there's nothing that you can do to get that data that isn't going to be very expensive.
Since you were having trouble making good disks, you should have been suspicious of these. Making two bad disks doesn't make one good set of data.

the only thing I can think of is, did you r or rw to these disks.
Could you read them with your cd rom before? If you used rw, usually only that drive can read them again after mounting.

When you checked them, did you check them with a DIFFERENT cd(rom/r/rw etc)? Always check with a different cd reader to verify you didnt burn a coaster.

If it is critical that you retrieve the data on those cd's, there are a few shareware software titles that may be able to do so (at least most of it, anyway...).
Here's a few:
CD Roller
CD Data Rescue
Bad Copy Pro
A google search should show you where to get them, or try webattack.com or download.com

i have had this exact problem many times. i know exactly what cd's will cause it, and the errors come like clockwork when i put the cd in the drive and leave it in there for a long time.
it is always from a burned cd, and in my case it comes from when i burn the cd from a specific image file.
sooo, i know this image file is corrupt, however i also know it is not corrupt enough for the cd not to work, but just for the disk management monitor in windows to know there is a bad data sequesnce written to the disk. not really a big deal.
on a side note, i have noticed that my plextor will kick out the errors more often than my pionier dvd drive. maybe the plextor is better at detecting the erros and thus reports it more frequently, i'm not sure, but the point is that the quality of the drive doesn't cause these errors, just the cd.
there is a chance that flashing the drive's firmware may help this issue.
