Access 97 Permission Problems

My Boss and the CFO of our company create databases for the various departments to use. The problem is that any database they create cannot be used by anyone but the admin group. My boss has 2 different machines with identical permissions and log on information but on one machine the databases he creates can be viewed and used by anyone in the company unless he sets permissions for the different groups, while the other machine and the CFO's machine can create databases only for the admin group. These permissions cannot be changed for some reason. They and I have searched through Access help files and user FAQs and cannot find what is different with my boss's machine that allows users to actually use the databases. Anyone with an Idea? The boss's machines are running Windows 2000 Professional and Office 97 Pro with all service packs. Some users running same set-up and others running Win 98SE. I have this posted at a couple other forums but no one can seem to answer this one.

Where are the databases located, network storage or local hard drive? Are the computers part of a AD domain?

They are saved to one of our servers after being created on the machines in question. No we are running a simple workgroup and we also run WRKGADM to force a log-on to access. By the way thanks for the fast reply.

Hmmmmm........this is one of those weird little problems that drives ya crazy.

Is your server running windows 2000? Is the database that everyone can get to located in the same folder on the server as the other databases that only your boss and CFO can get to? Have you checked the permissions on the folder that the databases reside in?

Server is Windows 2000 server SP3, yes everyone has access to the folder that the database live in we just use different permissions for different groups like Sales and Processing. Yeah I checked the folder permissions (I thought you found something I forgot for a second there) everyone has permissions. But even if the permissions were set wrong that wouldn't explain why one of my boss's machines can create databases everyone can use and the other mchines in question can't.

How many users do you have? What if you tried adding a few single users to the folder where the databases are on the server with full permissions? See what you get then.

It is weird that one computer seems to create good databases while the other 2 are being difficult.

Can you open one of the unaccessable databases on the one good computer, do a save as and rename it, and then have that database be accessible to everyone?

Man you must be a glutton for punishment! It makes no difference what permissions a user has if the database is created on the "bad Machines" only Admin can use it. The boss says that even Save As and renaming doesn't change it's permissions.

Have you tried taking the bad databases, copying them to the local hard drive of the computer they were created on, and then looked at the permissions?

Are the boss's computers formated NTFS?

Yes they won't allow any changes to the permissions no matter what machine they are on. I believe they are (NTFS) but I can't be sure since they have gone home for the weekend. I will find out on Monday and post. Thanks again for all your help you went above and beyond the call.

Thanks
Will

blubomber;
It turns out all the machines in question are operating under NTFS and it makes no difference if the users machine is FAT32 or NTFS the "good" machine's databases operate as they are suppose to and the "bad" machines cannot be opened except by admin. This is really turning into a major Pain in the ***. If you have any more thoughts fire away.

Thanks
Will
