p4 heatsink question

Well I finally got the parts to asemble a computer for my father.

I've never installed a pentium 4 before so I had a question about heatsink installation
I bought the retail package so it has the standard heatsink and fan with it.

On my current computer, AMD xp2000+ I've got a volcano 7 installed with no thermal compound and the temps are fine on it (low 40s). Should I apply the thermal compound that comes with the processor to the core or shouldn't I bother (no i dont have arctic silver 3).

Further notes: No intention at all of overclocking

Thermal compund should always be used on a cpu when installing a heatsink, with the pentium 4 stock heatsinks however you do not need to apply any thermal compound seeing as the heatsink should have a thermal pad already on it ( should be a black pad on the bottom of the heatsink). These pads accually work very well on the p4s and I wouldn't bother removing it and using a thermal compound if you don't plan on overclocking it at all.

For what is is worth, P4's cool very well. I am running my 2.4B @ 2.7 with stock heatsink and fan at stock temps. Very easy o/c too.
