setting static lan ip on my network

How do I do this. I set the ip to 192.168.1.2 on my lan, and it loses the internet connection. I have apache running on this machine, and it would be nice if it kept the same ip address when rebooting. So, anyone have any ideas how to do this?

We well need a bit more of information to help you out?

what operative system you have? Are you using a router or dhcp server?

I'm using Windoze XP Professional, and I'm using a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router model BEFSR41 with a cable internet connection.

I'm not sure what other info would be needed, so feel free to ask.

Normally you'd set your router to a static IP address of 192.168.0.1 and each of your machines thereafter would be set to 192.168.0.X (X=2 or above).

Then set your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 on each of your machines and your Gateway to 192.168.0.1 on each of your machines.

That's it you should be set.

DKY,

That setup should work as well.

Please explain lose your internet connection. (does it work for a few minutes then stop, or just not work at all once you switch the IP's)?

Also some ISP's have to list the DNS servers as well in your router. Do you have a setting in there that will let you set them and do you know what they are?

Maybe someone else can help us out as well.

Gary

it loses the connection altogether, I open internet explorer to go to google.com, and not only does it give me a "page cannot be displayed", I get a pop up that says "internet explorer could not open the search page". In my routers config, i have something like that, but it only happens if i change my "WAN Connection Type". I dont think that would be it. its set to obtain automatically, which i'm assuming means obtain the wan ip address automatically. I'm unsure what to do.

That doesn't make much sense. do you have another browser installed that you can try to use. If it works in another browser than you have some settings in IE that are throwing you off.

Can you go to a command line and ping a website and see if your getting out?

try both of these.
