Shortcuts and icons problem

I somehow changed the way shortcuts and icons in the desktop work or with what program they open.
right now all the shortcuts ".lnk" extentions in the desktop open with Internet explorer.

How do I change the shortcuts to work how they are supposed to???

I've looked at my own system and I can't figure out how to change it back via some configuration setting.

My suggestion would be to use System Restore and roll back to a date previous to the problem.

Any programs you have installed since the roll back date will have to be reinstalled.

can't use the system restore feature because of other problem i had all the data was deleted, when i try to choose the date, there is only one restore point, and it's after i did what I did.

save your important data and reinstall the operation system!

Have you tried right-clicking each shortcut icon and selecting "Open with"? From there you can choose the program you wish to use to open each and put an "X" in the box to always use the selected program to open that type of file.

I don't know if that's the answer to your problem, but it's worth a try to avoid a total reinstall.

I don't want to do total re-install. (traumatic)

And the shortcuts that are not working are the Applications
