CPU in freezer?

If you put something into the refrigerator or the freeze, does condensation form around it, or is that only when the thng in the frig/freeze is warm?

Example: If I stick a CPU into the freezor, wait 3 hours, then take it out, will it work?

It will work, but as it warms, there will be condensation.

Yes. If the room is very dry. But if there is any humidity in you house it will start collecting on your CPU right away, and probably short out something.

1 Condensation occurs of objects cooler than their environments. So in the freezer water would not condense on it but would when you take it out.

2 AMD chips sometimes crack if they get to cold and I wouldn't do what your talking about in the first place because as it chills in the freezer one internal component may contract with the cold at a different rate than the others, potentially causing damage and rendering the CPU useless.

3 The energy removed by the freezer with almost instantly be replaced on startup, and therefore not give a significant performance boost.

I don't think he's looking for performance boost.

I think it's related to the "AS3" thread, he's probably trying to freeze it so removal of the HSF will be easier. Just a guess though.

So freezing the CPU to remove the HSF and the resulting condensation during warm up should not pose a problem IF you let the CPU warm up and the condensation evaporate B4 you attempt putting the CPU into a system and firing the unit up. At least that is my opinion.

I think I would put the CPU into a ziplock and then put it into the freezer first just to be on the safe side... possibly shooting some of the dry inert air from a aerosol can just to minimize the humidity that would be in the ziplock and minimize humidity that could condense on the CPU as it warms. Again just my opinion.

DocReno makes a good point about the Ziploc bag.

I have never tried the freezer method, I use a hair dryer. BUT, I've never tried to remove AS3 either.

You may damage the core trying to do it either way.

I'll post here and in the other thread. Hopefully I don't get in trouble for double post.

First off all, I would like to note that we are not dealing with some experimental piece of equipment or anything of that sort. We are dealing with a 2 week old Radeon 9800 PRO. Yep that is right. 9800 PRO I bought it 2 weeks ago from BB and just tonight it crapped out on me. Screen turned into fuzzy dots and black. (while playing COD) Sound and everything went on fine, but no video. I thought it was a fluke. I rebooted, and dos came up, when I booted into windows, the screen was all purple.

I have the card water-cooled so I checked for leaks (which I have never had) and the card was dry. I checked for any other hardware cause, and found nothing.

The reason why I couldn't just take it back to BB was that after I plugged it in and made sure it worked the first day I Arctic Silver Adhesive'd some RAMsinks on the card. Can't return it like that.

Well, after pulling all my strength together I put the my Radeon 9800 PRO into the freezer, and left it there for about 1 hour. Looking at the card lying on the freezer showed no sign of condensation. As soon as I took it out, I could see the condensation appear before my eyes.

Interesting.

I will conclude this story in the adhesive thread.
