Can I use my Thoroughbred on an A7V133?

Hello- I just ordered a new CPU (AMD XP 2100+) the other day and it came in the mail just now. Upon opening the retail box I see this yellow slip of paper stating that I have bought a Thoroughbred (Model 8) CPU. I forgot to check when I ordered my CPU- but ASUS' website claims that the A7V133 will only go up to a 2100+ Model 6 CPU.

So far the only difference that I can see is the fact that the Thoroughbred uses .13 micron transistors and that it uses a lower core voltage than the Palmino. My question is- can I still use this CPU or do I have to return it and get a Model 6?

I have the latest BIOS (flashed it yesterday) it's version 1009.

i am not sure if you can or not . but you might have to flash the bios . so go check the asus web site first .

Look at your mobo and see if you got a dot after the rev no. For example mine's a a7v133c rev 1.05. (notice the dot after). Mine says the same thing about up to 2100 model 6. Right now I'm running an xp1700 tbred A at 12.5 x 133 (2000+). I sold my old 1700 palo to a friend with a7v133 (no dot) and it's running. Right now you have the right bios but whether it'll run the tbred is a big question. Try it. It'll run on it but it may become unstable but only if you don't have the dot.

Thanks for the ip wju425- I tried running the CPU before I checked back here- and came up with what you said. It posted the first time I tried the 2100+ but it was reading as an Athlon XP 1400MHz and was running at 1250MHz. So I tried flipping the FSB from 100 to 133 and bam- no POST. The only thing I could do to get it to post again was to remove the CMOS battery and let it sit for a couple minutes. It would post at 1250 (100MHzx12.5) but would endlessly reboot when trying to load windows. It would refuse to post at 133MHz FSB.

I looked on my mobo and see that I have the PCB rev. 1.05 (no dot) so I guess I can't run this Tbred. Too bad. I guess I will try and see if newegg will take it back? I just got it today in the mail- I heard they have like a 7 day satifaction guarantee?

Also- where do I buy a Palmino core Tbred? I'm assuming since all they changed was the fab size- the performances between the two are the same?

(edit) Nice link- on that site though they state that you need 1.05. to run even a Palmino chip? But I guess it must be a typo since yours is running one ok, and ASUS' site lists the XP2100+ model 6 as being supported with 1.05

Sorry that it wouldn't work. I'm sure newegg will let you return the tbred especially if you explain that you misunderstood about the core. If your tbred has a stepping code like AxxxB or JxxxB (look on the cpu where the black label is) you have a tbred "B" core which is very overclockable and I would keep it and get another mobo to o/c that cpu. I have tbred "A" which is not quite overclockable as B but then I'm going as fast as my mobo can go. I think you've hit the limit on your mobo as that cpu calls for 13x but you got 12.5x.
