Ahem...
All generalized statements aside (this statement doesn't apply to you, Dan), it all REALLY depends on how much money you want to spend. Everyone has their own personal preference, but it all really comes down to how much you want to spend on a given system, and what you plan to do with that system. As far as high-end performance, Intel currently holds the crown for the most powerful processor/platform. But, if you're looking more towards the mid-range, things tend to get blurred a bit more (especially by fanaticism).
But, if I were going to build the killer-est of killer gaming platforms right now, I'd probably go with a 3.2GHz P4 on a good 875P-based motherboard, and add in a nice Radeon 9800XT. Keep in mind, though, that this would be a spare-no-expense system, and the price tag would of course reflect that. (Them 3.2GHz P4's ain't cheap, YANNOW?!)
But, if I were going to be building a budget box to handle a moderate amount of games for now and a few years to come, things get a bit more complicated. Price becomes an issue, and I'd probably end up going with an AMD AthlonXP 2500+ on a good nForce2 board, and my PERSONAL preference would have to be a Radeon 9600XT. But, maybe that's just me. It all pretty much comes down to how much you're really willing to spend, in any case.
