Um, were you wanting to request this in the Trader's Forum?

PM a mod to have this thread moved there...

Do you have Win98SE on a CD? If so I can tell you how to put it on floppy and install it. It takes a little time but it works perfectly.

Is this a full CD version of 98SE or a reinstall version that companies like Dell, Gateway, Compaq etc?
If it is a full version then PM me and give me an email address because I will need to send you a couple of small programs and I'll include the instructions.

How many floppies long is it?

There are some programs still around like "split.exe". (I'm not totally sure it will do folders, but you need to split from a folder or you will get too confused) You copy the cd into a file, and then break the file into "x" number of floppies. Load them all another folder, one by one, then click on the "recombine.exe" fine and blooey!

Try a serial cable instead!

In a nutshell I contacted a couple companies like "WinZip" and "The File Splitter" and they described the process.

By coping the CD's Win9x folder to a directory on a working systems HD using DOS you will copy everything necessary and the file will be about 50MB smaller than if you copied the folder to the HD using windows. Then WinZip or any Zip utility is used to create a Zip file with all the files in it.

Next the zip file must be split into 1.44 MB segments to go onto floppies. I will send to anyone who requests the free file splitter program that works in both Windows and DOS. FYI, most file splitter utilities do NOT work in DOS. This program is used to split the Zip file into 1.44MB size segments.

Then you copy the 80+ segments to floppies for Win98SE to a directory on the target machine. Personally I use about 5 floppies and just copy and erase them and get a rhythm going. The final split file will be a .bin file that will will recombine all the segments in DOS on the target machine into a usable zip file. It does take about 2+ hours to copy all the zip file segments to the target machine. It's time consuming but without a better way it at least works.

Next the zip file must be unzipped. WinZip does not work in DOS but I have a copy of an older zip utility, an old version of Pkunzip specifically, that does work in DOS and it will unzip the zip file in DOS.

Then you simply install from the HD which in reality is vastly superior to installing from the CD (dramatically fewer I/O errors)

To address Chuckiechan's comment... I agree. I am making a serial cable and am going to try using LinkMaven to expedite this process. I also have a couple of older external HD's and the mfgs say it is possible to access them in DOS to expedite this but I've yet to figure out how to access these drives. An issue of too many projects not enough time.

Flav_cool.... give me a day or two more to get everything together and I will send you everything. I will need an email address to send these utilities to as attachments so PM me with your email address.

why not just slave the lappy hd to a pc and copy the cd to it . put it back in the lappy then install it from the hd ? it would cost ya less to get the adapter to go from 2.5 to 3.5 than is would for 80 floppies
