How do you create these backgrounds?

I know the basics of HTML and have designed some basic sites. However I would like to learn to do a site that contains a type of image down the side and across the top that blends into the rest of the page. I have noticed that these images seem to be made up of smaller images that are all grouped into cells. I don't really know how to explain it so heres an example of what I am talking about.

Example here

I know that the curved graphic on the left hand side is used by creating lots of smaller links but I want to know how to do it. I have Dreamweaver Fireworks and assume it can be done in there but am just not sure how to.

Thanks for your time.

The image is split into smaller images so it'll download faster... You can do this in adobe, with Slice.

The rollover effect is javascript.

for another example.

So was the entire side bar and top bar image created as one image and then later sliced up into smaller elements?

Yes. They musta used a program of sum kind, if not Adobe something similar. Not sure if DreamWeaver has it... but it might.

Each row, is a different image, and once the mouse rolls over's it, it just changes the SRC (source) of the image...

From this:

To this:

Not how I would do it, but thats how that particular site was done...

Thanks for the explanation but Im not actually talking about the link buttons. What I want to know is how they do the graphics in the background? especially that curved banner along the side.
