9800SE or 9600XT?

Without considering a softmod and overclocking, which one has better performance, a 9800SE or 9600XT?

9800 always has better, but you had better go with the non-se version, as it has had some compatibility issues.

The 9800 non-SE non-Pro at NewEgg costs $100 more than the 9600XT, though, but the 9800SE is around the same price.

I go with Tony's opinion. Go for the 9600 XT, in my opinion its better and its cheaper nowadays isnt it?

looks like the 9800se has 256bit memory while the 9600 has only 128

depending on the type (brand) of 9800se, you might be able to softmod it to open all 8 pipelines. my classmate has done this, and his se almost performs up to 9800pro speeds/scores.

don't mean to crap in on your thread txgiii, but i had the same exact question, so i will just throw it in here.

The 9600xt is 500/600 correct? Built by ATI, comes with 3 year warranty, and a free copy of HL2. Valued at $190, in reality is $130 since i plan on getting this anyway.

The 9800se is 325/500, oem, 1 year warranty, valuead at $145 Some possibility to use 4 pipes, but from a review read there it did not work.

This is a no brainer right? Get the 9600?

The 9800 core is more advanced in the dx9 area. But its enhancments over the 9700pro core are for HIGH res HIGH AA and AF settings. Which the 9800SE will never ever reach. The Se has 4 pipes-so does the 9600. But the 9600 is smaller fab-requires less power to run-has no molex adaptor and obviously the result is higher GPU mhz. The problem is it dont need higher gpu mhz but higher mem mhz to counter its 4 pipe defecit in comparison to 9800 non pro/pro. 9800Se is on = turf here. I wouldnt get the SE-it was aimed at the asian markets and somehow found its way in ours. All the 9800's that cant run 8pipes stable are labled SE's. ATI loses less $ this way. Ultimatly it will drop to bargin prices in a year. Thats their goal for SE-BUDGET but fully dx9 and not too castraited. right now the 9600XT is a better deal-just cause of less heat at near performance. For the record though-the 9800se does win against the 9600. 9600 XT models are new-I havent seen it putt against them yet but Im sure it still edges it out. No Non pro's left? I got the 9800 NP non-se for $250 at newegg. Was a Sapphire. But it was built By ati really. Since they make them. I ran the vendor and sub vendor ID's. They were the same # (1002) which means its truely BBA. Another left over from the ones that sapphrie made for ati. Saved me about $100 in the process too.
