Some of her points are valid, I'll give her that. RH's rpm database has been really buggy since the 8.0 release. It's an easy thing to fix if you know what you're doing but can be a real pain if you don't.

Honestly I'm not so sure that browser plugins are a big thing on any distro's bug list. Given she's comparing Fedora to XP Pro and OSX I guess it's a fair comment though.

As much as I love the application, RhythmBox has ALWAYS been crashy to me. I'm glad they didn't leave it out though. The more people using it the more people their will be to either fix it or complain to the developers who wrote it. Or someone else will write something better. Either way, I'm glad they included it in this release.

As for her problems with MP3 support - I know she installed the MP3 plugin but I can't help but wonder if the problem is with the drivers for her Yamaha XG-754 PCI sound card. I have no idea how well that card is supported and am not inclined at all to look it up but I know I've had flawless playback with a SB Live in RH 9 on this machine. And I let my computer play MP3s over night. Surely that's long enough to tell if they'll skip or not.

I can't believe she didn't bash Fedora/Redhat for not using KDE as the default desktop though. Guess that shows just how far Gnome has come. (Or she knows a lot less about Linux that I think she does).

Thanks for the linkage JKrohn.

Looks like Fedora will have to be better for the next review.

Quote from DistroWatch

2003-11-12 Review: Fedora Core 1 is a Mild Disappointment
OSNews has reviewed Fedora Core 1 and, as the title suggests, the reviewer is not overly impressed: "There is not a chance that I would use Fedora as my main OS at this point. It's got as many bugs as Swiss cheese has holes, multimedia performance (at least with XMMS) and included multimedia feature-set is below par, application installation is a major pain in the rear, and there is no official support anymore for the bugs encountered throughout the experience. If this distro is just serving as a testbed for Red Hat's ideas to see if they work and then move them to their Enterprise product, it just means that Fedora will always be in beta state, whether or not they announce them as final or not." Read the full review.

I can't stand Eugenia Loli-Queru's writing style and generally find most of her reviews to be fairly worthless. That said I suspect I probably am not her target audience so YMMV. I have read quite a few positive comments on Fedora, in particular it seems to have a rapidly developing following at arstechnica.

Regards
