Kids Icons on Files

Is everybody familiar with the little square that has the windows logo in the middle and has one corner folded? Well I'm suppose to get this icon when I try to open a file on a CD I got from a friend, and I don't. It keeps opening the file with notepad. Is there a way to set the icon back to the one with the windows logo on it? I have to change the file from a .Dat to a .TXT and it will not let me because of this. Please help.

well first off, if the file is still on the cd, you wont be able to change the name.

it is a .dat file i assume? the reason it has a notepad filename, is because you have notepad associated with that file type. to undo that look at file types in the folders options.

what operating system are you on?

if you want, you can also right click on the file, select properties, and change the icon there.

Windows 2000

I have Windows 2000 and I have copied the .DAT file to my desktop and tried to change it to a .TXT file by renaming it but it only renames it filename.TXT.DAT. I've tried changing it to excel and other, but I still have the same problem. If I try it on another computer it works, but for some reason on mine it doesn't. The file needs to be in a .TXT file in order to import it.

Control Panel
Folder Options
View tab
Uncheck the box next to "Hide extensions for known file types"
Then click on File Types tab
Go down to the file type "DAT" and delete it, that will stop associating it w/ Notepad.

in your folder options, (tools, folder options in a my computer window) click on the view tab, and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types" that is why you cant rename it.

you can also hold down shift, right click on the file, and you should see the option to "open with"

Talk It Works!!!!

I did what you guys told me to do and it worked. Now I can import the fles without having to go the long way around using DOS commands. Where did you guys learn so much? I asked one of the Tech's here and they could not figure it out. They said it was a virus in my computer. I sat down for half a day trying to figure it out and nothing. With you guys 30min. Thanks for everything.
