Work How to transfer files over VPN

Thank you for even looking at this post, if you can, please help.

I have a VPN setup between my home LAN (4 computers running XP - 3 pro 1 home) and a computer across town (xp pro). My problem is that I cannot figure out how to transfer files across the vpn. We are able to game with Diablo II and C&C Generals Zero Hour, but not transfer files. I am able to ping his IP and he is able to ping mine.

Things I've tried:

1. putting his real IP and LAN IP into the explorer window and IE6 window.

2. his computer does not show up in Network Neighborhood or "my computer".

3. I am unable to map his drive to mine or vice versa.

Any help anyone can provide is GREATLY appriciated.

DuraMax

Are you using routers on each side? Are you sharing files and folders?

Once the VPN connection is established can you type something like this in the address bar:

\\remote_computer_name\c$

and see the files on the remote pc?

There is a router on my side for the lan but not one on his. We both use cable modems for internet.
so i should use the "computer name" rather than the ip? I'll try that... any other suggestions?

Thanks Again!!

Send a message via AIM to Rand Dusing
A good thing for transferring files across the internet is using VNC search for VNC on google and you can set it up.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. The \\remote_computer_name\c$ didn't work, we tried shared folders, non shared folders, c drive shared and not shared, no luck.

But i'll try this option.

Thanks again,
DuraMax

I vpn between two domains and do what I said above wothout any problems. I don't know how you play games and cannot share files. Are you sure you use VPN for gaming? Can you give more detail (games used, ports used, how the connection is established (do you create the vpn connection first or start the game and then connect?

Sorry, wow so many questions, I feel like I forgot so many details

we use the vpn to game diablo II LOD and c&c generals Zero Hour, nary a problem with either. It uses (i believe) ports 1723, 500, 50, and 51 (this could be wrong). we set up the vpn and I connect to it then we start the game we wish to play.

Thanks again for all your help guys (and gals [just in case])
