Win 2K No boot

Hi,

We have an ACER Travelmate Laptop here that has stopped booting at all.

The problems started this morning when the user went on break and returned to it there was a black screen saying something like"Operating System not found". A restart resulted in a lock up when the blue box type thingies are abouth halfway along the space they go in. A few minutes later it showed a Blue Screen and this
***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xEB82384C,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

Further along it says amongst other things to run CHKDSK /F to check for HDD Corruption. How does one do this when the thing won't get far enough to run the Command Prompt?

Can anyone suggest what is up with this and how to rectify it.

Cheers

Well you can probably boot off of the win2k cd and use the 'repair console"...just boot and pretend you are going to reinstall etc but instead boot to repair console..which is sort of like a dos prompt but has some limitations. Then I think you can type "help" and it will show a list of commands. Or do chkdsk /?

But I would look that error up on google first

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I used a W2K CD from another machine and got it to run the repair console. The command CHKDSK /F produced an error message that the parameter was not valid.

C:\>DIR gave an error that said. An error occurred during directory enumeration.

C:\>CHKDSK /P runs for a few mins stops at 25% completed and then reports that the volume appears to contain 1 or more unrecoverable problems.

Does this mean that the HDD and all the info on it will be lost?

If I pull it out and stick it (with an adaptor cable) into another W2K or NT4 Machine as a slave and as long as the drive still turns will be able to salvage it or am I wasting my time doing this?

Cheers
