Nvidia 5700 Ultra or 5800??

Hey guys, have a few quick Questions?

Which Card Is better, Nvidia 5700 Ultra or the 5800?

Also, I,ve noticed Many Different Companies who make these cards, like PNY, ASUS, and so on. Any recommenditions?

What does the "Asylum name" on Nvidia cards mean? Is this like the "Pro versions" on ATi cards?

1) Nvidia 5700 Ultra, but why even CONSIDER a 5800? it's way too expensive for the measly performance, remember, the 5700 is one generation ahead of the 5800
2)It doesn't really matter, I always just go for the cheapest one
3) "Asylum" is just another company's naming sceme, for example: PNY names their cards "Verto", and BFG names their cards "Asylum" , "Ultra" is what Nvidia uses to compare to the "Pro" of ATi

DONT TOUCH THE 5800!! Its worthless. For the amount of money you will spend on the 5700, may I reccomend going with the Radeon 9600?

9600? I like it, but for just a little more money now you can get the 9800SE, which has the same or better performance. AND the possibility of a softmod to the 9800 pro, a simple mod gaining you $150 of vid card.

As far as the 5700 Ultra or 5800 , go with the 5700 U. But really, ATi is a better dollar value nowadays, with much better performance if you like AA and AF.

Uethello,

an 9800SE has half the pipelines enabled, so softmodding may get it up to speed with the 9800Pro, but will come nowhere near it's performance.

A softmod won't unlock the extra pipelines?

It depends on the actual manufacturer. Some make the card with the 4 extra pipes on the card but disabled in the BIOS. In this case a softmod will unlock the pipes. Hercules has a 9800 se with all the pipes, four pipes disabled in the BIOS.

Here's a review from hexus.net where they do this.

Buying a card specifically to softmod is risky, make sure you like the card for what it is, or can waste the money.

here's a XFX GeForce FX 5900 128 MB DDR DVI & TV Out for only $176.99 AR. -performs better than any 9600, 5700, 5800, or 9700.

Asylum is just an ordinary name that BFG decided to stick on its GeForce cards. ATi goes with "pro" and Nvidia goes with "ultra".

Without considering price, would the 5700 Ultra beat the 5800 on performance?

i can't say for certain...but i'm pretty sure that the 5700 ultra beats the 5800. Another thing to consider tho is that the memory bandwidth is considerably greater in the 5700 (about 27GB/s as opposed to about 18GB/s).

Also, as mentioned, the 5700 is based on the 5900, which is a MUCH better architecture than the 5800 is.

Last but not least...the 5700 doesn't sound like a jet aircraft taking off like the 5800
