Problem with Xp pro product Key.

I have just attempted a repair install by booting to my XP cd-rom.(not the recovery console) but a repair install that keeps all your data and settings etc.
My problem is when I enter the product key I am told it is incorrect. This is a legitimate copy of XP Pro and when I first got my computer I wrote the product key on the cd-rom cover as i was worried I would lose the sticker that was stuck to the shrinkwrap around the disc. Im guessing that i may have writtene it down wrong as it will not work. I took my disc to a local comp store to show him that I have a legit copy and asked him if he could give me a key but he said that when I try to activate XP it will be knocked back because the key has already been used.
But I am not even sure that I will have to activate it as it is not a complete new install?
The comp store dude also said that if I try to download service packs it will be rejected also because of the same reason.
Does anyone know what my options are here. I will phone Microsoft if I have to but even in Australia I envisage a long wait on hold, before being transfered from one end of the building to another.

TIA>
