I agree with "try not to waste admins time with frivolous complaints."
However, you do not need a standalone box to perform NAT level filtering and firewalling.
Plus I assume this writer has never experienced many buffer overrun or exploit attacks. Even a simple personal firewall like ZA or Syfate can prove effective in blocking malicious access to ports.
I would guess that it has been outdated for quite awhile. Even a simple personal firewall would have stopped a few of the worst Windows attacks that have occured recently.
