I agree with "try not to waste admins time with frivolous complaints."

However, you do not need a standalone box to perform NAT level filtering and firewalling.

Plus I assume this writer has never experienced many buffer overrun or exploit attacks. Even a simple personal firewall like ZA or Syfate can prove effective in blocking malicious access to ports.

I've never used "Syfate" , but I find Sygate to be very effective. I'm wondering how dated that article is?

I would guess that it has been outdated for quite awhile. Even a simple personal firewall would have stopped a few of the worst Windows attacks that have occured recently.

If we define snakeoil that, if set so, the fw will alert about everything 2000 times within 1 minute period, then yes.

Alot of the alerts are nothing, and should be ignored. But, a fw does a lot of good, too.
