Gaming problem with brandnew computer

ok, as some of you know, i got my mobo wired at this computer place and i just recieved my new samsung pc3200 ram (one stick 512mb) and i took the parts from my old computer to my new case (all the parts work with the mobo that i bought, processor, cdrw, hdd's, floppy drive and videocard). anywayz i just installed all the parts and i turned it on for the first time, very excited i might add, and it turned right back off. i tried it again and, like the first time, it turned right back off. it only stays on for like 15 to 20 seconds and then shuts off again. there is no beep from the mobo, ram is installed right and processor heatsink fan is turning as well as all the other fans in the case. my processor by the way is an amd xp1800+ (not the best but it'll do until i get another). any ideas? i've tried everything i could think of, i even unplugged all the unnecessary items such as speaker, mouse and keyboard (just to see if that would help).

any help would be appreciated!

have you tried unplugging the power to unnecessary items?
Unplug the power from cdrom/HD's (just to see if it keeps booting)

If it still doesn't work start pulling PCI cards

What brand of motherboard is it?

Some things to check:
Pull the heatsink fan and the cpu, clean both with isopropyl alcohol, put some thermal paset on, while you have the cpu out, check it for bent pins, and then reseat cpu and hsf, remembering to plug in the cpu fan to the mb.

Does your motherboard requrie you to have a 12v 4 pin power plugged in as well as the atx power conn?

i have a gigabyte ga-7vax and the cpu heatsink fan is working. on the front of my case it has a temp gauge and it says 28.6c. the thing that makes me wonder is that i just pulled that cpu and hsf from a working computer and plopped it into the mobo i have now. it's a great processor, never given me trouble. it might be the mobo? i don't know if i need to have another power pin.

I googled your board and find nothing on it.

Sure of the model #?

Bill

Edit: Never mind. Something strange going on with my copy. Turned the "V" into a "4."

Look to make sure there are no extra screws rattling around in your case that may be shorting out the system, I had a problem just like yours and that was the cause. Mine was a screw under the mobo, I don't know if you are comfortable taking it out but it may be worth it to have a peek underneath. Good luck!

i'm about to do just that, i got it wired at a local computer store so i'm going to check and see if one of the pillars underneath the mobo is touching a circuit. i think the mobo is the problem, i got the computer booted up last night by changing the system bus down to 100mhz. then i tried doing a fresh install of win2k and i had more problems with that then i have ever had trying to install win2k. it gave me errors about the memory management and when i tried again it worked just fine. it kept freezing and what-not so i decided to screw it and put all the hardware back on my other mobo in my original case. i might be selling the samsung pc3200 512mb ram stick. my older mobo handles both pc133 sdram and ddr so i might see how that works out. thanx for all the help, it's much appreciated!
