Misc ATI All-In-Wonder VE & video capture

I own an ATI All-in-Wonder VE. It is in a machine with a fast P IV CPU with 1.5 gig of ram and 2 striped RAID HD's. It took some tweaking, but I eventually discoverd that my audigy Platinum sound card was causing "dropped frames" during capture from TV or video tapes. When I disabled the Creative Audigy Platinum sound card and used my onboard Audio (Abit IT7 Motherboard) I was able to get my dropped frame rate to 0 or <1% for the entire capture as opposed to 15% and increasing with the Audigy Platinum card enabled. My questions are these:

>Anyone else have a conflict with the Audigy series Sound Cards and the ATI AIW VE when it comes to capture and dropped frames??

>Anyone using a card that does not create any dropped frame problems with the ATI AIW VE?

>Is it generally felt to be acceptable if the dropped frame rate stays at <1% over the entire capture, or should I be expecting 0%?

Thanks
Dave

How you encode the video really makes a difference. If you can push raw frames or losslessly compressed video, you'll get few or no drops. The issue there, of course, is where you're storing them.

The ATi AIW VE is PCI, yes?

ATI A-I-W VE and video capture

The card is PCI. I am storing the capture to Striped RAID drives. Having said that, what encoding method should I use via the capture settings available in the multimedia center capture program?

I'm guessing that there might be an issue pushing data around your PCI bus. If the AIW and the RAID controller are on the same bus, the data has to go one way on the bus to memory and back the other to the disks. This can seriously clog the bus. If you throw other components on there, it can get messier.

If you can, try using HuffYUV, which is a lossless codec. This will allow you to edit the video without data loss, and then compress it better at a latter date.

What format is this stuff going to end up in?

Send a message via AIM to phenious
use the least possible compression for the best info. Also read the read me. They talk about some problems with the Audigy line of cards and how to fix them.
