Some big website questions....

OK, my dad wants to set up a website for himself. He does all the family tree stuff for our family around the world... anyway.

He has a huge database, full of data such as:
Names (All olde spellings as well)
Dates of birth, death, marriage, kids etc
Kids
Locations
Values and so on...

He wants the site to have a searchable front end, that offers comprehensive searching
eg: 'anyone named 'steare', born between 1700 and 1750, in New Haven. The search would pull those results, and also any that either were spelt differently 'steer', or had no location...

He has it as an access database at the moment.

What software would be required to set such a thing up, how to go about it, and also anything in particular needed for the webspace to host it??

Any help, or questions... post!

Cheers guys

Send a message via ICQ to crouse
Could stick it into a flattext database, or mysql database, using a perl script or php script you could create a frontend form to access the script which would in turn access the database.

Depending on the volume of requests from people visiting, i would venture to guess that any webhost that would allow cgi and mysql should be able to handle this as far as server side stuff.....

The only fault i see would be the different spelling search..... that might be slightly harder to code.

How big of a database are you talking about ??
