Linksys Router Advanced Settings

Hello folks,

I have a Linsys BEFSR41 router. It serves as a gateway to a 1mbit cable connection. At the moment there are 2 machines connected to it there may be more added in future.

Each machine has a static IP. I am now trying to optimise the netowork, or at least start to make it safer. Looking at the advanced settings options there are a number of options that while i have an idea what they do i am not sure what the optimum settings are.

The main ones are the Routing options either Static or Dynamic. It is currently listed as Dynamic Router as a gateway with both TX and RX disabled.

Is this the best setting for my set up?

You do not need to touch the Dynamic or Static routing options. These options are used if the router was to be used as an interface between two subnets on a LAN. With your basic setup (two pc's networked together and sharing the internet), you don't need to configure those things.

The best way to keep your network secure is to not forward any ports unless you need to. To change the default configuration password, disable Remote Management and Remote Upgrade.

If you are afraid of someone connecting another pc to your lan without your permission you can enable IP filtering or MAC filtering (or both I guess) to allow only certain ip's to go out to the web through the router. But that is an internal security measure, not incoming.
