My monitor refresh rates are on the monitor tab, not the Adapter tab, check both tabs.

I must retract a statement I may have made earlier about refresh rates. I usually set them at 70 and let it go at that....although some claim they can still see flicker.

Well the other day I set one at 70 and I DID still see flicker, so I set it to 72.

Interesting....that was the first time I saw noticeable flicker at 70.

I was always told anything below 72 would be noticeable. I currently have one set to 70, and have yet to notice it.

I've also read that if you open a a white area the size or your screen (just make a white bitmap in Paint the same size as your resolution, then "View Bitmap") if you see a flicker while looking just above your monitor, you will get eye strain. You will also see the flicker.

I normally have mine set above 75 Hz, althought I've never ever seen flicker on any CRT screen that I can recall...

For a couple years I had an old 17" IBM monitor with .27 dot pitch, and had it set at 1024x768 @ 60 Hz. Never did notice any flickers. You can call me weird if you want to, but for some reason I've never had any problem with that and/or eye strain.

I'm on a dual setup now though 21" with 1600x1200 @ 85 Hz. You may think that 85 Hz is overkill, and it might be. But I looked at the screen and desktop at 70, 72, & 75 Hz. And couldn't really notice a difference at the different rates, until I took it to 85 Hz. Then it was like "Wow!!" There was a whole 'depth' that it added. Not sure why, I I haven't noticed it on other monitors, but it definitely added a nice touch on gaming, you know having a pseudo-3D look to it. The colors and contrast were just so much more dynamic with it set at 85 Hz. If you know, then please do tell...

Anyway, I'm running it on Sony Trinitron tubes... gotta love 'em...

does it really tax the system to a larger degree running 72/75 or 75/85 et cetera?

In a way yes if you have an inferior monitor or videocard - especially those that cannot go beyond resolutions higher than 1024 x 768. Otherwise, it won't be that much of a load for your system to raise the refresh rate to 75

Hope that helped

85hz overkill? Has the entire world gone mad?

85hz is a bare minimum for me. Sometimes, if the room's ambient lighting is just right then I can deal with 75hz for a limited amount of time. But sooner or later I always go back to 85hz or higher.

120hz is really really nice on the eyes. Wish I could run it all the time but with my current hardware it limits my screen resolution to 640x480 or 800x600, and that's just too darned small.

60hz is inhumane. Seriously. It's not acceptable to be viewed by human eyes. I can't stand it. The Win2000 startup screen is always displayed at 60hz and I hate looking at it every time I reboot. I usually just look away.

I kinda wish I was one of those people that claim they aren't bothered by crappy refresh rates like 60hz. If I could tolerate 60hz then I could run my desktop at 2048x1536. That would rock. But doing it at 60hz...that would suck. A lot!
