Kids PIII 500mhz to 1ghz

Can I upgrade a PIII 500mhz to 1ghz by just changing the processor? They both have 100mhz FSB and compatible with the same chipsets.

The only thing I noticed different is that the 1ghz runs on 1.75 v.

I have an old gateway with I believe a tyan motherboard. It is one of the first PIII 500's (I was young and stupid when I bought it).

Can I just switch the two out or do I need to do more?

Thanks.
Chris.

you will have to maybe flash the bios so it will have the settings for it . thats if you can . being it is a gateway it might not be able to to it . it is there way of getting you to buy again . you might not have the multiplier to do it . 5 multiplier is for the 500 and you will need 10 for the 1gig at 100fsb . i am sure the bios doesn't have that unless the 1gig cpu was out when the system was made then it might have the setting for it . but if the 1gig wasn't then you will need a biod flash so the bios has all the correct setting for the cpu .

Greetings MontevalloBooks,
In order to answer that question we really need to know what make and model your motherboard is. Try using AIDA32 if you run Windows and tell us what it says under 'motherboard'/'motherboard'.
You can get AIDA32 here: http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php
Cheers,
Elad.

Its a slot one....you are better off in this case getting a "slocket" and trying a socket 370 P3.

The slocket may need to be the type that allows "coppermine" cpu's to work on "ppga" boards.

There is also some data on intels site about changing the value of some components on the board to allow faster processors...if you know someone who is really good with a soldering iron you may consider that route.

here is the link for intels site..I found it by doing a search for "ws440bx"..but you see the third item down is the pdf for the component change etc

http://search.intel.com/corporate/se...2.0&q1=ws440bx

Is it a standard atx case? Possibly a different board would be easier to work with...especially if it uses a standard power supply. In that case you can get a decent motherboard combo and a bigger psu and youre set.

If you have a friend with some spare socket 370 cpus you can experiment with the slocket route...personally I would try that..cuz I have some spare parts. Slockets are sorta hit or miss...you just hafta try em to see whats up.

But a slot1, 1Ghz P3 is gonna set you back some bucks.

Slot 1

Slot 1.

That is what it says in AIDA 32 MotherBoard | CPUID | Platform ID

Thanks again.
Chris.

Hi again Chris,
Doesn't look like you're going to be able to do that upgrade. Yours is a slot 1 which maxed out much lower than 1000mhz I would say.
Here is a reference: http://www.magsys.co.uk/mbs/intelmb.html
Elad.

Here's your manual if you don't have it: ftp://download.intel.com/design/moth...m/70258701.pdf

And here is an update for the manual ... :ftp://download.intel.com/design/moth...m/72585505.pdf

Well, obviously it says only P2, but he is already running a P3, lol. And we know "BX" boards went up to P3's. There are some bx board websites etc that could be checked out for possibilities.

There are always options such as this

a "slot T" adapter. It is basically a slocket that allows a "tualitan" processor for a slot one board. As you see, youre board is listed as compatible. You could get that and a "tualatin" celeron and it would be smoking. A 1.2g tualitan celly is like $42 at newegg. They have 256 cache..so they are pretty sweet.
