FreeRide - The Free Ruby IDE

A new release of FreeRide is now available.

This is probably of no interest to anyone bar Vass and myself, but never mind.

The Good:
  • Syntax highlighting.
  • Sane colour scheme.
  • Collapsible code sections.
  • Use of whitespaces for indent.
  • Use of two space Tab.
  • Line numbering.
  • Clean layout.
  • Written in Ruby.
  • Cross platform.
  • Tabbed view for multiple files.
The Bad:
  • I managed to crash it once during debug.
  • Lack of text formatting options.
  • Lack of configuration (most stuff is hardcoded).
Considering its a pre V1.0 release its quite a nice little IDE for hacking out Ruby code. The hardcoded tab settings will probably offend some people but I am sure it would be fairly trivial to hack them about.

Just thought I would share.

Regards

ed

So far I seem to be getting on with it quite well, although I have largely just been using it as a glorified text editor.

One of the features I really like is that if a block of comments is marked up with the =begin and =end tags then it can be collapsed out of view. This instantly makes code more readable, especially if its a script that has a license agreement stuck at the top or a Class with some features documented via comments. I know a few other editors support this, but its still a nice feature.

However I do seem to be having issues with running code from the IDE and using the debugger, could well be because I have about four versions of Ruby installed.

Regards
