lag problem, how to fix?

for no appearent reason, my internet has started lagging. BF1942 has pings starting at 1200 (instead of about 5). downloading from any website or even clicking an attachment from a thread on here will result in it not loading. it just sits partway done and decides to not work anymore.

i dont know if this has anything to do with it, but my NIC has been acting up where everyonce in a while it says CAT5 cable disconnected....

websites and other web services still work fine (and fast) as long as it doesnt say disconnected..

when i get a new NIC will it fix these problems?

who is your isp? Have you contacted them about this? I have Comcast and was having similiar problems for a couple of weeks. They were overselling the Chicago area and not upgrading hardware quickly enough to keep up. I called and complained everyday and it has finally been resolved. Do a traceroute in the command window and see if there is a particular hop that is causing the problem and tell your isp about it when you call them.

Make sure other programs are turned off in the background. Kazaa, and other P2P programs will slow you down, as well as IE. Also, make sure youre not downloading anything, and run spybot and adaware.

p2p programs have not affected it. i run spy bot and adaware often. and i had the university people check it out. one time they said that it was because the registry was corrupted. another time they said it was the cable (but that cable worked as soon as the left). my only thought is that it is the NIC, and i am hoping that it will fix all my problems, unless you guys can think of something else

are you running any anti-virus proggies??? I know it sounds insane, but PC-CIlin 2003 installs a "custom cache" system. That program is full of bugs, when I installed PC-Cillin 2k3 it would cause web pages not loading, images not showing up on the web pages, etc. If you are PC-Cillin disable tmproxy from starting up.
