need a diagnosis
Hey people,
I'm kinda new at this, so that's why I'm asking this here. I've just bought a new pc, but when I try to play new games (or anything that's 'heavy' for that matter, like 3dMark) my system freezes after about 10 minutes. I think this might have something to do with the temperature. How can I control the fan speed? Also, it struck me as weird when I found that my video card (nVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 Ultra) didn't have a fan on it, just this massive heat sink. I read some stuff about updating your motherboard drivers, which helped for some people (that's also in regard to the AGP acceleration, which I can't seem to enable) but I can't find an exact match for my motherboard model (which is a Gigabyte GA-8SGXLFS), and I don't want to mess things up by installing drivers that might not work. I don't really know if you need more information about my system to give me any advice, but if that's the case just post it and I'll provide you with more info asap.
Thanks for your time, Matthijs

Welcome to TechIMO!!
Do you happen to know the temp of your system?
Also, how much RAM do you have? Could be the problem.
What is running in the background could be causing the problem. Sisoftware Sandra 2004 Standard can give you your temps and other valuable info on your system.

Oh yeah sorry, I forgot to mention those in my post. Here they are, the temps and rpm as calculated by SiSoft Sandra Professional 2002 (dunno if this still gives accurate results):
Board temp: 42ºC/107.6ºF
CPU temp: 25ºC/77ºF
Power/Aux temp: 32ºC/89.6ºF
CPU fan speed: 2192 rpm
I have 512 MB DDR ram and a P4 3.0 Ghz.
Thanks for helping me out, guys!
Matthijs

Hey Aurian:
After reading your post ... I am convinced your lockup/freezing is not due to temperature.
Is the 512MB DDR mem one stick or two? Are these modules a matched pair? Same brand ... speed ... etc? How many watts is your power supply?
What OS is installed on your PC? Did you do a clean install of the OS after installing vid card? If you have Win XP installed ... did you install SP1 before installing the Nvidia drivers?
Troubleshooting: Take everything out of your PC except vid card, memory, and HD (ie get down to basics) & try playing a few games.

Personally, I'd try the new drivers Nvidia released for the FX boards. If you installed just the drivers that came with the video card/computer I'd go to www.nvidia.com and get the newest drivers for the card and see if that helps.
I agree that it isn't a heat issue....which is a GOOD thing.

I have 512 DDR ram in 1 module, I have the latest version of windows xp, which already included sp1. I also already downloaded the latest nvidia drivers, so these were installed after installing sp1.
Thanks, Matthijs

You sure that's the correct motherboard model? Can't find anything matching on the GigaByte site and Google returns no results.
