Help with partitions
Okay, I got 1 HD with two partitions.
10GB system partition
70GB Files partition
I want to reinstall windows so I deleted the system partiton, and installed windows on it.
Now when I boot, my Files partition is C: and my system partition is D:
This is too confusing for me, so I would like to switch the drive letters back. I'm 90% sure you can't change the system partition from D: to C: while windows is installed because windows would be confused.
So if I reinstall windows again, how do I make sure my dirves get the right letters?
thx

What partitioning program are you using? Basically, what I think you need to do is delete Partition "D" with the operating system. Then create a new partition "C" making it "active" (bootable).
Then boot into C and install your operating system on C. When you are done D (which was C is now pushed out a letter) should be on your Explorer tree as an extended (logical) partiton.
But wait and see if you get any better ideas from others on the board.

I use Partition Magic. What are you using?
I think what happened is you didn't designate your new "C" as active/bootable and that is why you are messed up.
If you are installing Win2K the installation screen gives you some options for partitions.

How did you get there so far? Boot floppy, then fdisk & format? Or what?
And which Windows? (if w2K or XP, disregard as I don't know those! Might still be right, but...)
How do the partitions currently appear in fdisk?
C:\ needs to be the active primary partition - when you "deleted the system partiton" did the extended partition (D ) accidentally become the primary or active?
Deleting the primary part. is what's caused this - next time, just format it rather than deleting.
Personally, I don't care for "partitioning programs" and have had trouble with them - I always do it the old fashioned way from the command line after floppy boot!

I like Ed's idea....
When you loaded up XP were you presented with partition information?
1 BTW: can you get to your files to back them up?
2 BTW: you are bootable ok, you are just in "D" right? But win XP is running ok?
Gotta protect your data first and foremost.

I think I had the same problem.....I installed a fresh XP on D: thinking I could change the drive path after it was done. Well, it doesn't work, what you get is C: Boot and D: System or something similar. Like was said, I would back your files up and reformat all drives and reinstall XP, then reload your apps etc.

crap.... I have 76 GB of data. Don't think I can back all that up.
I'm going to try using partitions magic, and if that doesn't work, switch on my dos skills and revert to go 'ol FDISK.
