Cable Modem Networking on Two PCs?

I would like to configure two PCs on my Cable Modem with Cox Communications. I believe that I will need a cable/dsl router with enough RJ-45 jacks for two PCs. I would then connect my cable modem into the router and have two separate cat6 molded cables coming off of the router into each computer. Of course each computer would have to have NIC connectors also. Is this the correct way?

I believe that I can buy a router for $25-$30 on ebay and 2-14ft cat6e cables for $3.00 from on of my wholesale suppliers.

Also, after I finish with the hardware installation, could someone guide me on how to set up the software part. I have a computer with Windows 2000 Pro and the other one has Windows XP Home. Thanks!

That's pretty much how I have my DSL connection set up. The only thing I had to change was to move from a static IP address on my boxes to obtaining an IP address automatically from the router.

The connection setup will be using your router. Most routers have a web browser setup page that you access by typing the url into your browser's address box. For example on Linksys routers you type http://192.168.1.1. From there you can enter the info required by your provider to obtain a connection.
