Internet COnnection

Hi, I'm using a:

P4 2.8GHz 800MHz FSB, Hyperthreading tech.
Windows XP Pro (legitamate version!)
1 GB Corsair "Extreme" memory (sidenote, stuff is amazing!)
WD 200GB Hard Drive 7200RPM 8MB cache
WC 40GB Hard Drive 7200RPM 8MB Cache (WinXP loaded on this drive)
SB Audigy 2 Soundcard
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB
DVD-R 2x Toshiba
DVD-ROM Mitsumi 16X
On board Lan Gigabit (intel) 10/100
Linksys WAP 4 port Switch
Cable Modem

I am trying to connect to my internet via the router. I am unable to remove, release, or renew the IP address. I've tried multiple NIC cards and also connecting directly to the cable modem and was unsuccessfull. I've done the newtwork setup wizard and created connections, and it still wont' connect. I am thinking it might be a windows problem? When I try to repair the connection I get the message "Renew IP address failed and flushing ARP cache failed" Any help or input is appreciated.

If you can't get an ip direct from the modem without the router, then either your ISP is screwing things up or every nic card you tried is bad. Did you turn of the built-in firewall that comes with XP? Did you contact you ISP's tech support?

The nic cards do work b/c they work in the other computer I have. I actually bypassed the router and hooked the cable modem directly into the computer and nothing changed so it's not the router/nor the cards. Any other help is appreciated, thanks guys!

connect your computer directly to the modem

go into a command line and type:

ping www.google.com

This will tell you if you can 'talk to' the website Google. If you get an error, your Windows configuration is probably screwed up.

Hate to sidenote your sidenote, but why is the "extreme" memory amazing? I mean, how do you differentiate it from any other memory?
