is it wrong to go to a computer place for help?
i bought me a new platinum xp case a while back and a gigabyte ga-7vax mobo and wanted to get it installed so i tried to wire it. this case has sooooo many wires in it that i couldn't get it wired, i couldn't figure out where and in what order they should go (even looking a the schematic), so i went to a local comptuer store with my case and mobo to get it wired and they said that they charge $30, well the guy that helped me couldn't have been more snotty toward me, saying "it's not that hard to wire these", i don't care how hard it is to you, you have been doing this for several years now and this is only my second computer to make. i'm not ashamed to say i need help when i do, he even told me that if i didn't wire something right that i could fry the mobo, gees, i really want to go out on a limb and say that i know what i'm doing and ruin a $100 mobo! what do you people think? is it wrong of me to ask help when i don't know what to do? i even asked him to show me what he did when i come to pick it up so i know how he did it.
thanx for the listening,
<shad>

In the words of Dirty Harry: Quote: | A man has to know his limitations! | Don't feel bad I've been there also.
These tech dudes at these shops do it every day and get to the point where they think everyone should know this stuff.
I get stuck, I ask for help.

there is nothing wrong with asking anyone for help, i do apologize that the guy behind the counter was snotty to you. Perhaps you should talk to the manager about the employees attitudes towards people who know little about computers.
either way the best of us in some point of time ask for help

I imagine they were just miffed cuz you bought the stuff elsewhere.
Some people think that by making snotty comments that they are somehow "getting something"...I dont see it.
Plus, maybe the dude is the dumbest tech there..maybe thats ALL he CAN do..is hookup motherboard wires....so he made the comment to try and make himself feel big, lol.
Dont even sweat it dude....EVERYONE has to learn EVERYTHING they know at some point..so rest assured...one of them other dudes probably held the techs hand the first time he tried to put a motherboard in etc.
Im not afraid to say a fellow tech held my hand when I built my first system from scratch. I was scared of the whole heatsink/compound thing, lol...scared id fry it. Of course...most stuff AINT hard...its just intimidating at first. They also had to show me how to setup a dial up account. how to....nevermind, the list is too long, lol.

iseeu_3 rest assured in the near future you will undoubtedly surpass that poor excuse for of a customer service provider in overall technical abilities. The simple reason is he will be too busy patting himself on the back instead of continuing to learn his trade. It might be worth locating another local shop that can provide you reliable courteous service while you continue to learn. By the way, always ask for help if its is needed.

I used to work in one of these shops. The layout for the boards is nearly always the same, and you get used to it. They will typically use the same boards all the time as well, so they learn it by heart. Its no excuse for being rude to a customer like that. He got $30 off you, which is probably a standard charge for fitting parts/upgrades etc. Maybe a bit much in this case, but they're out there to make money. If it was me I would have told him to stfu and do it myself, but you couldn't do that. There instructions are kinda complicated, and you can bet he'll have screwed up a couple of times. There's nothing wrong with asking for help. If there was places like Timo would be in serious trouble
Take care

No one knows it all.
No stupid questions. Just stupid answers, (sometimes).
Techimo is all about questions. Networking is the word of the new millenium.
Networking queries is what techimo is all about.
Techimo is a collective of minds that creates one brain. Instead of weeding through technical jargin that could take for ever, ask a question here and there is a very good possibility that someone on the forums has had real life experience with your issue.
Always ask questions. A wise man/woman surrounds himself with smart people.
If you had a digital camera you could have posted shots and we could have saved you some money possibly!
Write down the address to this thread and give it to the store manager. lol He may take head of my wise man adage.
Cheers!

At my local shop we have a part timer there who works on Saturdays. The owner's off on that day so he doesn't know what that guy's doing. I and my friends (separately) had heard this guy talked crap to customers. He even called me mr megabucks because I dug out bills and changes to buy a sound card. I and my friends talked about it and decided to call the owner at his main store. I heard later that the owner came and literally threw this guy out the door.
