Weird stuff

I just had a network outage with my DSL provider, they're not sure what's wrong but they're working on it. Anyway, I am on dial-up right now and about 10 minutes into connecting, I get an odd popup telling me my computer is shutting down and then a little timer counts down. It says it was initialized by NT AUTHORITY/WINDOWS or something like that. I am using Windows XP Home on this PC, the one with the problem. This never happened before, I am also pretty firewalled and secure in my network, but right now with dial-up some screwy things are happening...

Anyone have any idea what this is? Currently running Norton AntiVirus with updated definitions, and no viruses yet. Thank you.

That's the "Blaster" virus at work! Ctl-alt-del, to get TASK MANAGER, go to proccesses and look for "msblaster.exe". R click and select "end process tree. Download repair kit from Norton or repair manually. Good luck

You will need to enable a firewall to prevent it from happening again, or get the security patch from Microsoft, I'm sure someone here knows the link; I don't know it off hand.
I bet your firewall isn't working since you are now using dial up!!
You can delete the msblaster.exe from your system directory, or just use search and search for it and it will pop up.
Good Luck!

yeah make sure your CURRENT connection is firewalled

if its the blaster this link will help

http://securityresponse.symantec.com...oval.tool.html

NOTE disable system restore before attempting to remove the blaster............viruses can "hide" in system restore

MORE good luck

I would agree with excuz-but it may not be the virus in and of itself, but rather the damage left behind. Check settings for RPC service.
