Car adapter for iPod?

I just got a 20Gb 3g iPod and want to use it in my car. However, I'm not about to shell out $25+ for a cigarette lighter adapter. I called up Mouser Electronics and ordered a firewire jack and a 7812 figuring that I can build my own. I already have the dock cable as well as a cigarette lighter plug to use. I was also thinking of adding a small cap and maybe a varistor if I can find some in my junk box.
My question:
Does anybody forsee any problems with this project? The parts from Mouser only cost ~5 bucks shipped, so it's no biggy if it doesn't work out. Any comments at all would be appreciated.
TIA!

I think you could better spend your money @ radio shack for an adapter that will let any object work that normally plugs into the wall. They for for about $50 but Hey. Then you can plug what ever you want in, not just your Ipod

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that I don't want to spend that kind of money on something that I would only use with my iPod. Besides, if I can have something for $5, why spend $50?

True, But when I found my self with 4 Car adapters I said screw it and just got that and put the car adapters in the glove box for a rainy day never looked back. Also works with cell phone chargers. Those go for a bit of money too. As well as my camcorder... you get the picture... it was a good move for me... might not be for you you decide

That would be correct. After re reading the thread, I jumped to the wrong conclusion. My bad, I thought it was about sound input.I was too quick with the reply button.
