While you were away, did you home go through a lightening storm/power surge or outage?

Even without a storm, if your neighborhood lost power, and then power came back on, that power-up is usually accompanied by a power surge.

I know it's a stretch, but maybe you can check with the local electric utility (or a neighbor who was home during this time period) and see if anything happened. If an outage occured and your hardware is fubar'ed, you may be able to file a homeowner's insurance claim and get compensated.

If nothing like this happened, I don't know what to suggest.

constant reboots could mean you've got the blaster worm

nasty little thing

do you have the xp security patches, firewall and antivirus.

symantec have a removal tool for this worm......u can run the tool to see if you're infected......if not happy days ............if u r infected the blast fix tool should sort u out

http://securityresponse.symantec.com...oval.tool.html

this link will take you to the tool and instructions on how to use it

OK
No power outage or powersurge when computer #2 went down..

Computer #1
Has no virus,
and it has never been on the internet
I guess it's a hardware problem on both computers?

That would be a remarkable coincidence, to say the least. Did these both go down the same day?

Okay... I understand better now. The wording of your original post seemed to imply there was a connection between the "misbehavior" of both PCs. I allowed myself to be misled.

The first PC (reboots constantly): I'd try to run the PC with a simple W98 boot disk (write protected) and see if simple DOS commands can be executed. If a (write-protected) boot disk works fine, then I'd start looking at a (boot sector or other) virus issue. Overheating (HS actually pulled away from CPU) might cause this, also. Also check and reseat ram, vid card, and all other components.

Consider complete repartition/reformat/reinstall if boot disk works. If still N/G, prob bad mobo?

The second (your) PC... try another power supply. Sometimes a voltage line (12v in the case of the HD) can be running too low a voltage and give spurious results.
