Thanks nukes.

The server is running windows 2000 server standard edition. It is also running AD as the PDC.

When i think about it, i am wondering why i am running IIS 5.0 on there since i am not using it to host a website or anything.

But that still makes me think about my original question, weather or not i am running a website.

Well from a security standpoint somebody should go up and ask WTH you're thinking
IIS on a Domain Controller
I would suggest GETTING IT OFF the box SOON lol

oh and when I asked "Is this win2k server or AD?" I meant "AS" as in standard or Advanced Server.. my bad!!

I'd suggest even if you are hosting a website to get it off as that is a serious serious problem.
Good luck

You are correct vass, this is a bad situation from a security standpoint and i plan to correct this problem.

Hopefully the event log errors will go away with it.

Thanks again for the help.

Sorry. I was a bit drunk last night. I won't use the internet like that in future.
In the meantime, you could just up the number of CALs in the control panel section.

They should do, yes.
The security problem might not be so bad if you're hosting an internal website, and there are tight controls on the client machines, but if for example someone works this out it could go horribly wrong. Personally I would avoid IIS altogether, but there are features that can be handy in certain environments, also some companies have policies that say you have to use MS. Apache runs great on Windows BTW, if you do want to switch. Linux makes a great webserver platform, but it isn't neccesarily possible depending on the company involved and their rules about that sort of thing.
I repeat, I'm sorry about that first post. It wasn't very helpful.

Dont worry about it nukes, i understand.

Well, i was not the one who originally had setup that particular domain controller 2 years ago. That was back when my company was converting from a Novell network to win2k, and i did not hold the position i do now. They hired outside help who went with the default install of win2k server that includes IIS.

The only thing i use IIS for is OWA for the exchange server. I have taken all the steps to make the IIS server as secure as i can and it seems to have been fine so far.

Thanks again for the reply and no offense was taken.

no apache does NOT run on IIS

apache and IIS are competing products they are not related in any way whatsoever.

oh and apache DOES run on windows 2000

You can run any webserver on win2k, IIS is just the default.
