Overlapping channels.

Hi guys,
I red a paper a while ago on how 4 channels could be used instead of the commonly used three channels (1,6 and 11). Yes there would be some interference but at the worst it would be about 4%, so acceptable.
These 4 channels would be 1,4,8 and 11. Using 4 channels would help a lot especially if deploying a wireless network on different floors of a same building, so that there would not be intereference from floor to floor.
Does anyone know how common this option is? Do people set up a lot of the wireless networks using this 4 channels pattern for large installations, or they stick with the usual 1,6,11 channels?
Thaks for your help,
ajpug
