Mandrake 9.2 annoyance

i noticed that mandrake doesnt install a lot of packages by default that 9.1 did. so i went back in added all the packages that i wanted that wasnt installed. they installed fine but i lost alot of programs from the start bar. so basically being a noob i lost the ability to configure anything.

so i thought maybe someone hacked my box but i wasnt connected to the networ at all. It also happens when i update mandrake too. I thought maybe it was just me but a guy at work had the same problem.

any clues?

What do you mean install by default? I think you can choose in the install what packages you want to install. And maybe when you say you lost alot of programs from the start bar you deleted packages instead of installing. I have no clues at all, strange indeed. But I really don't think someone hacked your computer or something. HTH's

Have you tried logging in a different user to see if the section is different?

I'm not sure what you're missing or what you want to add but if you right click on the K (start button) you should get the option for a "K Menu Edit" or something similiar. It's be a year or so since I've used KDE so if it's that option's not there then things have changed since I've last played with them.

Write back if that's not helping.

for example i lost all the games, applications, configuration and everything else that basically renders mandrake no worth use when you dont know how to use it.

all the folders are there, but nothing is in them

This is a real quick run down of what i would try (but hope someone else comes along - I'm sure my list won't be complete)

1. Log out of KDE then log back in.

2. Log in as another user and see if his menu is correct - create a new user if root's menu is messed..

3. Log into Gnome and see if that menu is correct (this could be a KDE only problem)

4. Give us a status report after trying the first three.

This is fixable - it'll take a couple steps to see the apps are still there or if the menus are just busted. (I suspect the later).

well it happened to me, they dissaperad after you installed new applications correct....

can you get to console? you need only to rebuild your KDE Menu and all the applications you had installed and the new ones that you installed will be there.

In a console as root type drake or drake.conf
I think.. not remember well, When i get home I get you the correct one.

I knew one of the Mandrake guys would have the right answer!

Sorry for taking you the long way around - I just don't haven't used KDE in a long time.
