Hey all,
I booted up yesterday and got a strange message. "cpu failed test." i googled and found that some ASUS boards have problems with the heatsinks that pull away from the processor and cause this error. well I disconnected everything and pulled the tower out and played with the heatsink a bit. (mostly just pushing it down) and tested- work perfectly.

Now the bad news.

At some point I must have hit the switch on my power supply to off. I was in the other room and heard a loud POP!!! and that was that.
Pulled everything out and touched the PS and Burned myself pretty good. Set the PS on the rug and the rug started smoking !!

My question is- think anything else was damaged? I was planing on going out and getting a new PS tonight, but am unsure if there is anything more wrong. Will hooking everything up to a new PS be cool? I am guessing there is only one way to find out Any thoughts?

thanks
mike

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Although that catastrophic of a failure doesn't bode well IMO.

I may need to brew another pot of coffee (or something) because I am definately missing something.

If the power switch was off (accidentally or otherwise) how in the he** could it have come on by itself and caused all of this?....

A switch on your PSU? Why is there a on/off switch on a PSU? I have a variable fan control knob but there are 2 fans on my PSU.

Cheers!
