Connecting two LAN's

Hey I got a question. Basically I got 3 or 4 higher ups where I work that want off the local LAN we have now. The LAN's server sits on the county commission side. (politics lol) It's a private network with a subnet of 255.255.255.0. Don't know if you need to know all that stuff, but anyway those higher ups are wanting on Law Enforements LAN which is not connected with us, however those 3 higher ups still have to be able to connect to the as/400 which is located on the local LAN. Is there something I can do such as use a bridge, or router to be able to make those two LAN's comminicate with each other. The different IP schemes is what has me confused. Does it matter?

That's what routers do, act as a gateway between two subnets. Take a basic broadband router. It routs requests from the local lan to the internet. The local lan may use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 in the 192.168.1.x range, the internet provider may use (as and example) 255.255.0.0 in the 69.84.x.x range. What would you plan to use a s a router? A multuhomed pc or seperated router device?

I would most likely use a router. So basically I would have to put the router where the two networks would meet. But I'm confused about the workgroup. If their on another LAN and presumeably on their own workgroup, how could they get access to another workgroup on the local LAN?

Assiging to mulitple Workgroups on different computers.

Subject: Assiging to mulitple Workgroups on different computers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
I have one problem that I am trying to solve, but no luck. I created a secured database and a workgroup that the database join with permission for admins and users
level. The database and workgroup are in a network server. The problem I ran into is multiple users will access the database from different NT computers.
1) Do I have to go to each individual computer to join my workgroup that I have created in order to work?
2) There are some users who need to access my database, but their computers already had joined a different workgroup pointing to a different database that somebody
else had developed.
3) What can I do in this situation where I want the users to access my database and joined to my created workgroup and not other workgroup my their computers.

Any help would be appreciated at I am trying to solve this problem quickly. Thanks

Probably the easiest thing to do is have them launch the database using a shortcut, and in the shortcut properties, use the /wrkgrp switch to set Systemdb (i.e. the workgroup) for the database. For example, to launch a database called "db.mdb" usinga workgroup file called "workgroup.mdw", you could use this string in the shortcut
definition "c:\db.mdb" /wrkgrp "c:\workgroup.mdw" (assuming both files are located in
the root).
