If you've used Putty before and liked it you really owe it to yourself to try out WinSCP. It's a great little client that will allow you to transfer files to and from a box running an SSH server (typically a *nix box) without having to go through the hassle of setting up an FTP server.

It's not a direct replacement for FTP in most cases but it's a handy tool none the less and I've gotten enough use out of it to think it deserves a post.

Maybe I should have posted this in the Linux and Unix group instead even though it runs in Windows. This is a great little application that works really well if you need to transfer files from one machine to the next and one is running an ssh server.

I've seen this program, my bro uses it. I never looked into it as the linux boxes I use have samba installed, and I can just use that for tempory transfer of files. Plus my workstation runs Gentoo.
So, you don't need any additional server software? just ssh running on the server machine? That would come in handy.
edit:
read the page *doh* looks good. I'll have to make a note of this if ever I need to do this sort of thing. Thanks man!!

Thanks! I'm glad at least someone liked it.

What makes this program really useful is when you somewhere that's not on your own network, say at your work and need files off of your machine (I run into that problem all the time). So long as the port SSH uses isn't blocked you can either save or retrieve files to/from the box without the use of an FTP server. I've found it quite handy.

Well, the only system that has ssh running all the time is my fileserver, as there's no keyboard/mouse/monitor on it. but that doesn't allow connections from anything but this box and the windows machine in the office. Heck, it won't even let the router machine downstairs mount shares from it.
When I get Linux on the machine downstairs working with the ISDN card, I'll run ssh on it, and then I can do whatever the hell I want, but I'm not going to give a windows machine that's connected to the internet access to my files anytime soon.
Still, it may come in handy when I go off to uni.

And that's when it'll be handy to you Nukes, when you go off to Uni.

Now when they start making the cell phone/pda combo is powerful enough to let you connect anywhere you want to give you access to your files and the device in hand (phone/pda combo) is powerful enough to let you do something with it, well.. then you're really doing something.

Right now I just having the ability to get to my stuff at home from work. Even if it is only something as stupid as getting access to my rather large collection of wallpaper.
