Upgrading AMD Duron 800 to XP 1700+
I am replacing a Duron 800 with an XP 1700 on an ECS K7SEM motherboard. I have noticed virtually no difference in speed and the CPU is identified as unknown, at 1.1 GHz. I know that the 1700 runs at 1.467 GHz, as I am running the same cpu (1700) on the same motherboard in another system, and it is much faster than the 800. What am I missing here?
Thanks for any help.

you have it running at 100 fsb if it shows 1.1ghz. go into the bios and change the fsb to 133 and you will be set

Thank you.
Now, how do I change the front side bus on this board? I see nothing in bios setup that mentions fsb or gives any options for this.

On default the FSB is set at 100 like Omardeath mentioned, there absolutely has to be a FSB setting in the BIOS.

Thanks Darthgary.
I have been through every menu in setup and can find nothing referring to fsb. |

... unless his motherboard doesn't support 133 FSB! My brother has a FIC mobo that he got back when he got a Duron 800, and it is 100Mhz only. It sounds like your board is reading the 11x multiplier correctly, but it has only 100Mhz to work with, thus 1100Mhz. If that's the case, hopefully at least you can go with a higher multiplier and at least get the cpu cycles up, though that only helps the ram bandwidth a little bit.

How about we check and see which version of the board you have and update the bios?
I would bet you need to update it to enable the 133fsb. http://www.ecs.com.tw/download/k7sem.htm

| Sounds rather like your MB does not support the processor, perhaps a BIOS update is available?

I downlaoaded the manual, let's see if we can find it:
Chapter 1 Introduction:
The mainboard has a Socket 462 to accommodate AMD Anthlon/Duron processors that support frontside bus speeds up to 100/133
Page 5
Although the K7 SEM mainboard supports a memory bus of 100/133 mhz. you cannotset the memory bus speed less that the cpu bus speed (CPU/memory: 100/100. 100/133. 133/133
If you are using pc 100 Sdram, it's no go until you get some 133.
Entering Setup: Familiarize yourself with page 35, the Bios navagation keys. You can hurt anything by exploring each menu item as you read the manual.
Before attempting to flash the bios, try these first:
Page 41, enter the advanced Bios features menu, hit F7 to load Optimized defaults, save and exit. If it is still at 100 MHZ, I bet its the ram is pc 100.
Make a stop by the Pc Health Status Page (58). It will tell you the temp of the CPU, with fan speeds if the fans have three wires. Might want to see if the new processor is staying below 50 to 55 degrees C at idle, to know you have made a good installation of the heat sink. It it continues to rise above that, it wIll eventually shut down as a safe gaurd when you put a load on it.
Last stop, page 59 of the manual. Frequency/Voltage control option. THAR SHE BLOWS!! If the optimized defaults didn't up the FSB to 133, you can set the auto detect DIMM/PCI clock to Manual, then change the CPU internal core speed to 133.
Remember the previous note: you cannot set the CPU FSB to a speed higher than the Ram. You can run a 100/133 (Ram), but not the other way around.
If any of these steps fail to boot, you can reenter setup to load fail safe defaults (F6)
ONE MORE TIME: if you have PC 100 ram, it will probably not run at 133 MHZ FSB. If you "overclock" the ram to 133, do so knowing you may need some ketchup, cause it might fry the ram.
DO NOT FIDDLE WITH THE RAM TIMINGS UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO EAT IT.

Does this board have a manual jumper for 100 / 133 settings? Some boards do. If it does, its likely near the top of the board.
