I'm looking for a program similar to XP Lite, hopefully free, that can make Windows XP a whole lots smaller. How small do you think I could get Windows XP too? Also since Christmas is coming up soon, I'm going to get an extra hard drive. Should I get around 10 gb hard drive for the OS (XP) and then get a 120 to back up games, music and apps? Also, I plan on getting a DVD Burner will I be able to make backs ups of Windows XP with this ona 4.7 gb disc?

Something like XP Lite?!
Its not lite enough?

I don't think there is such a thing.
MS Makes it extremely difficult to get rid of that cr... software for a reason. You got XP, you got the BULK.
You can't get rid of it all, but your best bet is to tweak it to lighten what actually runs at all times. Check into what services you can shut off from turning on automatically.

If you want to make backups of your OS, I'd suggest getting Norton Ghost to make an image.

Why do you care? An XP installation is about 1.5 gig, compared to hundreds and hundreds of gig theoetically available in storage. Plus, its only $40 for XP Lite. Might as well give some poor developers a little dough.

Maybe he just wants to "tinker" with his install. I am like that.

I would be interested in finding out how small of an install I could manage, just out of curiosity.

I vaguely recall getting an install of 98 down to ~50-60mb without the use win98 lite AND I could still surf the web. It was unstable but kinda fun to experiment with.

(I just went in and systematically moved wasn't important looking. to a folder outside of windows. If it failed to boot I just moved the file back.)

Yep. If you want a stable version of XP Lite get Win2k. It's not much lighter than XP but it's really stable (and still very tweakable).
