not sure about reinstalling the critical updates.

if it says sp1 and the ms scan says there are no new updates available then u should be ok.

tell me how u checked your udate history, i'll do the same and let u know wot i find.

sorry iguana i am probably the stoopidest person u could have got.

how do u start windows installer??

btw......if you go to add remove programmes and scroll down you should see sp1 installed ................if it's there

there were a couple of important updates after sp1 but they are small and can be downloaded and installed quickly if u r unsure about wheter or not you've got them. sp1 is a big brute and takes a while. ok how do i get at windows installer....when i've nothing to install

if you mean how to get to windows update you can find it on the top of the start menu, otherwise use hepl an support , you can find it there as well...In my add-remove i can see some ''Windows XP Hotfix K******* and also ''Windows XP Hotfix SP2'' but not sp1...

ok.

if u r down loading and installing sp1 in one big chunk, if i remember correctly you first download a 3 mb tool that manages and installs the rest of the download. but yor ms scan is telling u that no new updates are available.

have you tried doing a system restore to a point before sp1 was installed. then go through the whole sp1 installation again.

do you have 56k or broadband......if you have 56k then maybe the installation of sp1 got interrupted. if that's the case then you might be better to do the restore and then down load all of the individual updates seperately.

I am assuming yours is not a cracked version of xp. cos i don't think sp1 will install on cracked.

don't give up.

have you tried contacting ms.

let me know how u get on

Dodssy thanks for replying,
I emailed microsoft , i got a response..It worked for me so i post it in case someone else needs it ...

1. Connect to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
2. Click Personalize Windows Update
3. Put a check mark in the box “Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also”
4. Click “Save Settings”
5. Click “Windows Update Catalog” on the left side of the window
6. Click “Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems”
7. Select the appropriate operating system and click the Search button
8. Click “Critical Updates and Service Packs” (if you do not find the update look under Recommended Updates)
9. Find the updates that you need and click the Add button
10. Click the “Go to download basket” link
11. Click the Browse button and choose a location to download to
12. Click “Download Now”
13. Read the licensing agreement. If you do not accept, you will not be able to download the update.
14. Once the download is complete, go to the location that chose to download to and double click the Software folder
15. Double click all of the folders inside until you reach the.exe file
16. Double click this file and the update should install. ----

I tried the above and the install seemed to be normal..
You have to note down which updates have failed so you pick only these..My only remark is that the updates you make ,although istalled now , they will not be listed in instalation history..Also not all the updates are visible in add remove programs..
