modem connection??

using aol 7.0 with windows xp. i know aol sucks but its a friends computer. i finally upgraded to cable. well he was connecting fine until a few days ago. now when dialing up (has tried various different aol access numbers) it goes all the way through the connection screen and verifying password and all that, and it seems to be connected for a second before booting him off and just says goodbye from AOL. never actually gets to the main AOL screen after signing on, still at the connection screen when he gets booted. AOL swears it is not an AOL problem of course. Could it be a problem with the modem? it is still dialing though and seems to be okay until when it kicks him off. any idea of what could be wrong or how to troubleshoot it? thanks!

I would try to see if you can go into the AOL setup and look for more dial up numbers in the area, this way it will dial the AOL 800 number to try and get a list of numbers in the area. (at least that is what it used to do) If you can get a list of numbers without disconnecting, then it has to be aol and not your modem.
