Funny you should ask....... I just posted a thread here:
http://www.usalug.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=842

and I'll repost most of it here for you :

http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/
-----------------------------------------------------

Advanced Bash-Scripting Guide
An in-depth exploration of the art of shell scripting
-----------------------------------------------------------

This is a FREE online book at www.tldp.org (The Linux Documentation Project) ............ it has a TON of information.

from freshmeat:
Quote:
The Advanced Bash Scripting Guide is both a reference and a tutorial on shell scripting. This comprehensive book (the equivalent of about 590 print pages) covers almost every aspect of shell scripting. It contains 277 profusely commented illustrative examples, and a number of tables.

I'd recommend the O'Reilly book. I haven't got it, but they are good, and the other ones I've bought have served me well. No harm in looking at the howto at linuxdoc though.

To be honest I would have a hard time justifying the cost of a full book on bash scripting. Documentation covering 90% of the functionality that most people will regularly use is available for free online and could be summarised on a couple of pages of A4.

If you find yourself regularly writing complex bash scripts then I suggest you think seriously about switching to another scripting/interpreted language that doesn't suck quite so much. Ruby, Python and Perl spring to mind.

Regards
