To try something different... LINUX

I have decided to experiment with using LINUX. This will make me a first time user of it, but I feel I should have no problems. Any suggestions for someone new to it? Thanks..

I've been playing with mandrake 9.1 for a couple of mounths, and except for games it works great. The grapic interface lets you use it right away.

I was reading TechIMO within minutes after setup.
What else do you need?

Thank you for your response. I am just curious if there is anything that I should be paying close attention too when installing, or if there is any special steps I should take.

You might want to have this moved to the Linux and Unix forum, you'll get a better response that way.

My advise is that you start with Knoppix. It's a full linux distribution that boots off of a CDROM. You can load it up and play as much as you like without having to save anything on your hard drive.

If you find that you love Linux, and want to dump Windows, you can download a full distro and install.

If you find you don't like Linux, you haven't tampered with your system at all!

It's a great tool.

I would definately try knoppix out, but keep one thing in mind. The Knoppix menu is probably the worst menu ever created.

It has so many submenus and sub-sub menus that I have a hard time trying to find programs I know are there. So if you find the menu frusturating, keep in mind that not all of linux is that bad

As far as what to keep in mind? If you have the space install EVERYTHING. Especially development libraries. If you want to install software later this can make your life much eaiser, plus on modern hard drives they don't take up too much space. (A full install takes about 2.5 GB of Mandrake 9.2)

Other than that check out http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/jkrohn/www/.../Mandrake.html
