removing thermal grease from CPU die

I put in the white grease that came with my SLK-900 but I just got some AS3 so I'm plannin to put that.

I'm wondering how to remove the thermal grease from the CPU die?

You can use either isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or acetone (fingernail polish remover) and a soft cloth.

"goof off" is the best..it rocks...but dont use it on plastic...it'll 'melt' the plastic on some cases.

I think lighter fluid also works...lighter fluid is great for cleaning cases etc...buy it at tobacco stores.

I dissagree with the lighter fluid. It leaves a dust catching film.

On cpu's or cases??

Its great for getting rid of smudges, lifting old stickers off etc.

Hard to find a replacement for it in certain situations.

I would say both. I used to play the "bench Rest" game. (group shooting) I used lighter fluid to lubricate the trigger in my rifle. Oil and grease were too heavy. clock & watch lubricants were too hard to get and VERY COSTLY. The lighter fluid would wash away the crud it would migrate to all the parts dry and left a lubracating film.

Here's what I do to clean off a CPU die...

I don't use nailpolish remover. Alot of times, it's gonna have all kindsa perty vitamins to make your nails look all nice, but that's just going to be one more thing you're going to have to clean off of the CPU die...

What I use, is Naptha (zippo lighter fluid), followed by a quick cleaning with Alchohol. The naptha is great at getting the crud off, with minimal work, and the solution to the dust catching film is a quick swipe with rubbing alchohol. I've not had any problems yet with catching dust, and in all honesty this is going to be something you're going to be regreasing and covering again pretty much right away anyways.

Naptha is also very useful for removing old stickers from just about any surface.
