256Mb Vid Cards Cost No More Than 128Mb ?

I've just started noticing that their prices, which used to be much higher, are now only a few bucks apart or pretty comparable.

So what gives ?

Is the X-tra Mbs been discredited? Would people just prefer a better GPU to more memory once they hit 128 ? Does a bottleneck kick in with present hi-end GPU's that prevents any benefit ?

Any demonstrated advantage in saving system memory with a 256 Gfx ? Seems cheaper to "buy" Vid Memory than system memory !
